Back from Christmas at Budick Vean and the New Year's Drive In

Had a brilliant Christmas at Budick Vean - probably the best weather in the country. There is a nine hole golf course and competitions were arranged every day which kind of made you very smug when you came in and attacked the menu which was fantastic - every day! You never knew who you were going to play with which made the comps all the more interesting. Amongst those I played with was a very jolly chap who insisted on shortening everyone's name in a matey sort of way so I became 'Hel' " Come on Hel sink the putt he would cry!" In contrast on another day I got a bloke who refused to smile til we got to the eigthth - that was when he saw someone chip backwards into a bunker and take another 3 to get out - I secretly wished it would happen to him. On the final round the pro Tony gave me the card to keep but this bloke clearly thought I was incapable and insisted on taking it off me - okay fine - the trouble was I then proceeded to prove how useless I was by having a ten on the first hole wheras he pared it with a 4. UGH! Fortunately I drove the next hole and pared the next 2 holes. He softened and I smiled sweetly at him when he duffed his chip!
ANYWAY - New Year's Eve - very good party - deliscious food and good disco. Had to laugh tho'
there was a table of 'younger' members who refused to dance to any of the sixties/seventies stuff but as soon as the mod. stuff came on they were up - the rest disappeared - then when the 60/70s stuff was played they promptly left the dance floor and the rest came back - such is life!!
Stayed at the Bathurst Arms which was really good and hoping have persuaded the landlord, James to sign up to a sponsorship.
NEW YEAR'S DAY - cold but beautiful sunny day - couldn't ask for better. Was alarmed when we arrived to see yard markers all the way up the course. HELP. Went and had a practice to warm up - glad I did. Decided not to have the slo gin as recommended by Rod (director of Blithe Spirit) had the mulled wine instead. The tension built up all morning - had to have a photo shoot first of raisng the 2010 flag - then finally at long last, the Captain's were all summoned and off we went to the first tee. Mark did a superb drive and as a left hander he had to face the audience so to speak - then it was my turn - thank God I had my back to the audience so at least I wouldn't see everyone's faces if I duffed it. I thought as I lined up I've just got to hit it for the sake of a good omen for the year and actually was perfectly calm at the moment of swing and impact. I knew it was okay cos I heard a great cheer behind me before I looked up to see it land somewhere near the blue marker post. Phew! I can tell you I then got the shakes big time and could barely walk off the tee - if anyone had asked me to drive off again I would have dropped the club! The aggregate turned out to be 939. Ron C. won it with 935! J. had 945 - close!
Heard from all the family when we got home - include the Oz family who had had 3 hits to the beach that day - am I envious? Course not!
Meg and I packed away the Christmas decorations yesterday - just as well - got back to Cheltenham as the snow decended thick and fast. There will be no roll up on Thursday and I doubt Charles, Jayne and the twins, Daisy and Imogen, will come this week end.
